MAJOR ASCENT

Mountain: Sepu Kangri

Route: Upper Thong Wuk Glacier and West Ridge

Country: Tibet, People's Republic of China

Height: 6956 meters/22,821 feet

Dates of Expedition: October 2002

Overview of climb: Chris Bonington, Charles Clarke and their teammates payed the price and reaped the satisfaction of exploring this amazing range of unclimbed Tibetan mountains on three previous attempts to climb Sepu Kangri. We came there later, bringing skis to the mix, and hopefully succeeding to climb this beautiful, weather beaten mountain in central Tibet for the first time.

Team Members: Mark Newcomb, Jordan Campbell, Kate Clayton, Ace Kvale, Carina Ostberg, Carlos Buhler, Frank Pickell

Lasting Impression:

We pulled off the first ascent under the superb leadership of Mark Newcomb.  Climbs of this magnitude require a lot of skills and Mark possessed them all to a high degree.  I felt privilegedt to climb with these people and remain thankful that we were able to experience such a remote part of Tibet.
